N.U.A.N.T. = Normal Uric Acid? No Thanks! A campaign for gout sufferers. Because Normal = Average and that means misdiagnosis and mistreatment.
On average, 4% of the population gets gout. So the normal range for uric acid is based on some gout sufferers. That means…
Normal Uric Acid Misdiagnosis
When gout is suspected, most doctors will test your blood for uric acid. But if the results come back in the statistical normal range you are told you don’t have gout. Except that if uric acid is above 5 mg/dL it’s likely you do have gout. Above 6 mg/dL and your uric acid is dangerous. So gout is almost certain. Also, you are in a high risk group for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, kidney failure and other diseases associated with high uric acid.
Without a gout diagnosis you can never start on the road to recovery. So you are left to a life of misery. Simply because your doctor didn’t understand your blood test results.
Normal Uric Acid Mistreatment
Eventually you might get your gout diagnosis. So it’s time to take medicine to control your uric acid. Now professional rheumatologist recommendations are to reduce uric acid below 5 or 6 mg/dL depending on patient circumstances. That means starting with low doses of uric acid treatments. Then increasing the dose to achieve medically safe uric acid levels. But the doctors that don’t understand normal uric acid will stop increasing the dose once you reach their statistical average. So you remain under-treated with low quality of life and high risk of death.
Without uric acid treatment to safe targets you can never achieve gout recovery. So you are left to a life of misery. Simply because your doctor didn’t understand your blood test results.
Normal Uric Acid Campaign
Unfortunately, misdiagnosis and mistreatment are widespread. But worse, the whole industry is tainted by misunderstanding the normal uric acid problem. So scientific papers are published that keep repeating the nonsense. Inevitably, that leads to poor conclusions. Then that bad science props up bad decision-making in all areas of gout management.
So if your health professional talks about normal uric acid as a medical standard, it’s time for you to consult somebody else.
